Ostia Antica
Roman, 400 BCE–500 CE
Ostia was the harbour town of Rome at the mouth of the Tiber, founded by the fourth century BCE and flourishing under the empire as a commercial city of insulae and warehouses before silting and decline. It preserves Roman urban life better than Rome itself.

What was found
Excavations exposed apartment blocks, warehouses, the mosaics of the Square of the Corporations, mithraea, the synagogue, baths and theatre, and recovered amphorae, lamps, sculpture and inscriptions of the port's trade. The site museum holds sculpture and the Ostia synagogue finds.
Rules
Nothing may be collected, dug, moved or removed at Ostia Antica; it is a protected archaeological site managed by Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica, Ministero della Cultura, and taking artifacts, stones or samples is an offence. Italian law vests all archaeological finds in the state, and removal or export is a crime. This article is for study and context only and is not a collecting locality.
