Flint Ridge

Flint Ridge is the prehistoric quarry of Flint Ridge flint in Licking County, Ohio, worked from Paleoindian times through the Historic period and most intensively by Hopewell people. The state memorial protects part of the eight-mile ridge; the rest is private.

What was found
The ridge is covered with thousands of quarry pits and workshop debris of Vanport chert, including hammerstones, cores, blade cores and preforms; finished tools are rare because they were carried away. Hopewell bladelet cores are characteristic.
Rules
Nothing may be collected, dug, moved or removed at Flint Ridge; it is a protected archaeological site managed by Ohio History Connection, and taking artifacts, stones or samples is an offence. Federal, state and tribal law, including ARPA and NAGPRA where applicable, protect the site and its burials. Collecting flint within the memorial is prohibited; some private landowners on the ridge sell raw stone separately. This article is for study and context only and is not a collecting locality.
