Raddatz

Raddatz was named by Wittry in 1959 from the Raddatz Rockshelter in Sauk County, Wisconsin, and is the standard Middle Archaic side-notched point of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and northern Illinois. Hixton silicified sandstone, Prairie du Chien chert and Galena chert are common. It is abundant and moderately priced.

Diagnostic traits
Thick side-notched point with a straight to slightly concave ground base, U-shaped notches set low, and a triangular blade of lenticular section.
Identification
Raddatz is thicker and cruder than Early Archaic side-notched forms like Graham Cave and lacks their deep basal concavity. Godar is broader with shallower notches; Osceola is much larger. Later Woodland side-notched points are thinner and unground.
Reproductions and fakes
Not worth faking; check for basal grinding and Hixton's sugary weathered surface.
