Newnan

Newnan was named by Bullen from Newnans Lake in Alachua County, Florida, and is the signature Middle Archaic point of peninsular Florida and south Georgia. It is made on Florida chert and agatized coral and is found in large numbers on lakeshore and river sites; big coral examples are very desirable.

Diagnostic traits
Broad triangular blade with horizontal barbed shoulders and a short, tapering stem with a straight or rounded base, thin for its size.
Identification
Newnan is broader with squarer barbs than Marion and Levy, which have longer blades and less pronounced shoulders, and its stem is shorter and straighter-sided than Putnam's. Morrow Mountain of the Carolinas has a sharper contracting stem.
Reproductions and fakes
Agatized coral reproductions are common; genuine coral points show a dull surface rather than bright polish, and river examples carry the same even staining as other Florida finds.
