Flint Ridge flint

Flint Ridge flint is the colourful, translucent Vanport chert quarried for at least ten thousand years on a ridge in Licking and Muskingum counties, Ohio, and traded across the Eastern Woodlands. Hopewell and Adena knappers prized it, and it is the state gemstone of Ohio. Collectors value points and blades in the rarer red, blue and rainbow varieties.

The outcrop is a low ridge about eight miles long east of Newark, Ohio, pocked with thousands of aboriginal quarry pits, part of which is preserved as Flint Ridge State Memorial. Nodules and beds occur in the Pennsylvanian Vanport limestone. Small amounts also occur in glacial drift across Ohio.
Identification
The stone is chalcedonic and often translucent, in white, grey, cream, pink, red, blue and multicoloured mottles with a waxy to glassy lustre, and fossil inclusions are rare. Pits and small vugs lined with quartz crystals are common. Heat treatment produces a glossier, redder surface.
Substitutes and fakes
Modern knappers buy Flint Ridge flint at rock shows and produce points, so the material alone proves nothing; look for patina, edge wear and provenance. Modern heat treatment gives an even glassy pink lustre that ancient pieces show less uniformly.
