Únětice
2300–1600 BCE, Europe — Western & Central
Únětice is the Early Bronze Age culture of Bohemia, central Germany, Silesia and Poland from about 2,300 to 1,600 BCE, named after a cemetery near Prague. Its people controlled early copper and tin metallurgy, deposited hoards of ingot torcs and flat axes, and built princely graves such as Leubingen; the Nebra sky disc belongs to its world. Collectors hold ingot torcs, flat axes, triangular daggers, pins with looped heads and small bronze ornaments, mostly from old finds.

Identification
Ingot torcs (Ösenringe) are open rings of copper with tapered, rolled ends found in hoards of dozens; flat axes are trapezoidal with slightly raised edges. Triangular riveted daggers, eyelet pins, spiral bracelets and amber beads are typical grave goods. Pottery is plain, dark and burnished with a distinctive cup form.
Legality
Únětice finds in the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland are state or Land property with reporting duties, and hoards found by metal detecting are subject to prosecution when not reported, as the Nebra case showed. Legitimately held material derives from documented pre-war collections.
Reproductions and fakes
Ingot torcs and flat axes are cast new by hobbyists and by forgers and given chemical patinas; genuine patina is layered, hard and integrated with the metal, while artificial patina is powdery or paint-like. Casting flaws, hammer marks from finishing and wear at contact points are absent on modern casts.
