Straight ammonite

Baculites is the straight-shelled Late Cretaceous ammonite whose segmented steinkerns from the Pierre Shale, with their intricate suture patterns, are among the most familiar fossils in trade. Nacreous, iridescent Baculites from South Dakota and Montana are cut, polished and sold as sections; complete phragmocones with the body chamber are rarer. Baculites species zone the Campanian–Maastrichtian of the Western Interior.
