Late Preclassic
1000 BCE–250 CE
The Late Preclassic, which here also covers the Middle Formative, spans the La Venta Olmec, the founding of Monte Albán and the growth of Maya centres such as El Mirador and Kaminaljuyú. Writing, calendars and monumental architecture become widespread. Teotihuacan begins to grow at the end of the period.
