1600–1950 CE

Historic covers the period of written records in North America, from early colonial contact to the mid-twentieth century. Native American material of the period, including trade-silver, catlinite pipes and beadwork, overlaps with colonial and later Euro-American artifacts. Much Historic Native material is ethnographic rather than archaeological and is governed by different rules.
