Villanovan

Villanovan is the Early Iron Age culture of Etruria and adjacent Emilia and Campania, about 900 to 700 BCE, that developed directly into Etruscan civilisation. It is named after a cemetery near Bologna and is characterised by cremation in biconical urns, hut-shaped urns and bronze fibulae. Collectors hold biconical and hut urns, impasto bowls, serpentine and leech fibulae, razors and bronze belt fittings, mostly from nineteenth-century tomb groups.

Identification
The biconical impasto urn with a single handle and incised meanders, closed with a bowl or a bronze helmet, is the type object; hut urns model thatched houses. Bronze work includes crested helmets, serpentine and arc fibulae, lunate razors and sheet belts. Pottery is hand-made, dark impasto with incised or stamped decoration.
Legality
Italy claims state ownership of archaeological objects under its 1909 and 1939 laws and the 2004 Cultural Heritage Code, and export is tightly licensed; the United States has restricted Italian archaeological imports under the CPIA since 2001. Only objects with documented pre-1909 or licensed export histories are safe.
Reproductions and fakes
Villanovan fibulae and razors are reproduced and patinated, and biconical urns are reconstructed from mixed sherds with extensive modern fill. Genuine bronzes show layered green and red patina and wear at the pin and catch; impasto vessels show a soft, friable, hand-built fabric.
