Karnak

Dynastic Egypt, 2000–30 BCE

Karnak is the vast temple complex of Amun-Re at Thebes, built and enlarged by pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemies, with the Hypostyle Hall of 134 columns, sacred lake and obelisks. With Luxor temple it forms the Ancient Thebes World Heritage site.

What was found

The Karnak Cachette yielded over seventeen thousand statues and bronzes buried by priests. Excavations recovered the White Chapel of Senusret I, obelisks, the Hypostyle Hall reliefs, the annals of Thutmose III and countless inscriptions.

Rules

Nothing may be collected, dug, moved or removed at Karnak; it is a protected archaeological site managed by Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Supreme Council of Antiquities, and taking artifacts, stones or samples is an offence. Egyptian law vests all antiquities in the state, and removal or export is a crime. This article is for study and context only and is not a collecting locality.
