Casa Grande Ruins
Hohokam, 1150–1450 CE
Casa Grande is a four-storey caliche Great House and walled compound built by the Hohokam around 1350 near the Gila River and abandoned by 1450. It was the first prehistoric site protected by the United States, in 1892, and is roofed by a steel canopy.

What was found
Excavations recovered Casa Grande Red-on-buff and Gila Polychrome pottery, shell jewellery, stone axes, palettes and evidence of canal irrigation. The Great House itself is the largest surviving Hohokam structure.
Rules
Nothing may be collected, dug, moved or removed at Casa Grande Ruins; it is a protected archaeological site managed by National Park Service, and taking artifacts, stones or samples is an offence. Federal, state and tribal law, including ARPA and NAGPRA where applicable, protect the site and its burials. This article is for study and context only and is not a collecting locality.
