Zapotec
500 BCE–900 CE, Mesoamerica
The Zapotec of the Oaxaca Valley built Monte Albán around 500 BCE and dominated the region until about 900 CE, developing an early script and calendar. Their tombs, cut beneath houses and palaces, held grey-ware effigy urns representing deities and ancestors. Collectors hold urns and urn fragments, grey ware bowls and cups, small figurines and jade beads, with urns the most valuable and most faked.

Identification
Zapotec urns are grey, reduction-fired, mould- and hand-built figures with a cylindrical vessel behind, showing seated deities with elaborate headdresses such as Cocijo, the rain god. Grey ware bowls (G-35 type) with plain or incised rims, tripod vessels and mould-made figurine heads are typical. Later Mixtec material from the same valley includes polychrome and metalwork.
Legality
Zapotec objects fall under Mexico's 1972 federal law, the US Pre-Columbian statute and CPIA import restrictions, and export is prohibited. Only urns with documented pre-1972 collection histories can be legitimately sold.
Reproductions and fakes
Zapotec urns were being forged in Oaxaca by the early twentieth century, and thermoluminescence surveys of museum urns have shown a substantial share to be modern. Fakes are often over-elaborate, use an inconsistent grey body, and show mould seams in the wrong places. Buy only with laboratory testing and provenance.
