Norton

1000 BCE–800 CE, North America — Arctic & Subarctic

The Norton tradition covers the coastal and riverine peoples of western Alaska between about 1,000 BCE and 800 CE, including the Choris, Norton and Ipiutak phases. They hunted seals and caribou, fished with nets and introduced pottery and oil lamps to the region. Collectors hold small chipped side-blades and points, ground slate pieces, check-stamped pottery sherds and, from Ipiutak, ivory carvings that are almost entirely in museums.

Identification

Norton pottery is thin, fibre-tempered and check-stamped, unlike anything elsewhere in North America. Chipped stone includes small bifacial side-blades, end-blades and stemmed points, alongside ground slate and stone oil lamps. Ipiutak ivory work with openwork spirals and animal heads is spectacular and unmistakable.

Legality

Norton and Ipiutak sites are in Alaska on Native corporation, federal and state land where collecting is prohibited, and Ipiutak burial art is subject to NAGPRA. Only material from documented early twentieth-century collections is legitimately in private hands.

Reproductions and fakes

Ipiutak-style ivory carvings are reproduced by modern carvers and by forgers using old ivory, and are the main fake problem; check for patina in the deep cuts and evidence of stone-tool rather than steel or rotary work. Lithics and sherds are rarely faked.
