Moche portrait vessel
100–700 CE, Moche
Moche potters of Peru's north coast produced portrait vessels between about 100 and 700 CE, chiefly in the Chicama, Moche and Virú valleys, and some individuals can be recognised across several vessels made at different ages. They are the finest realistic portraiture in the ancient Americas and among the most valuable Andean ceramics. Nearly all came from looted tombs; Peru's 1929 and later laws forbid export and the US has restricted import since 1997.

Diagnostic traits
A mould-made stirrup-spout vessel whose body is a naturalistic human head, 150–300 mm high, in cream and red-brown slip, with individualised features, headdress and ear ornaments.
Identification
Moche vessels have the stirrup spout with a flat-topped lip on fine-grained oxidised clay; Chimú blackware is reduced and mould-made with a monkey on the spout; Wari and Nazca use polychrome, not the two-tone Moche palette. Phases (Larco I–V) are dated by the spout shape.
Reproductions and fakes
Portrait vessels are copied and, more insidiously, 'improved' from plain genuine vessels by recarving or repainting; modern examples have crisp slip, no wear at the base and spout rim and a smell of fresh paint. Genuine vessels show fine cracking of the slip, salt deposits and mineral staining from burial.
