Frederick

Frederick was defined from the Hell Gap site in Wyoming, where it occupies the latest Paleoindian level after Agate Basin, Hell Gap, Alberta and Cody. It belongs with Angostura, Jimmy Allen and Lusk in the terminal Plano oblique-flaked lanceolates of the northern Plains. Hartville chert, quartzite and Knife River flint are typical.

Diagnostic traits
Lanceolate with parallel to slightly contracting sides, a slightly concave base, well-executed parallel-oblique flaking and ground basal edges.
Identification
Frederick is difficult to separate from Jimmy Allen and Angostura by outline alone; it tends to be wider than Angostura with a straighter base and less concave than Jimmy Allen. Assignment usually rests on the Hell Gap stratigraphic context rather than form.
Reproductions and fakes
Not specifically targeted, but oblique-flaked lanceolates in general are; look for basal grinding and patina.
