Crowfield

Crowfield is the latest of the three Great Lakes fluted types and is named for the Crowfield site near London, Ontario, excavated by Deller and Ellis, where a cache of deliberately burned points was found. It is best known from southwestern Ontario and adjacent Michigan and is almost always made of Collingwood chert. Points are uncommon in collections because they break easily and were seldom discarded whole.

Diagnostic traits
Very thin, wide, pentagonal to lanceolate fluted point with a shallowly concave base, multiple narrow flutes on each face, and light basal grinding.
Identification
Thinness is the key: a Crowfield of 4 to 6 mm is thinner than any Gainey or Barnes of the same width. The multiple short flutes and the wide, sometimes pentagonal outline separate it from the single-fluted, waisted Barnes. Holcombe is smaller, narrower and only lightly fluted.
Reproductions and fakes
Reproductions rarely achieve the thinness and usually show a single broad flute. Genuine examples on Collingwood chert have a soft, chalky grey-white surface with no glassy fresh scars.
