Dactylioceras
Ammonite
Dactylioceras is the ribbed, evolute Toarcian ammonite found by the thousand at Holzmaden, Whitby and in the Alps; D. commune from Whitby is the 'snakestone' of legend and D. athleticum the Holzmaden slab species. Whitby examples are grey-brown limestone nodule fossils; Holzmaden ones are flattened and often pyrite-coated. Multi-ammonite Holzmaden slabs are often composites, and Moroccan Dactylioceras 'slabs' are sometimes carved.
