Trade with another collector

1. Agree the yardstick. Community practice values trades at retail-equivalent — what each piece would fetch from a dealer or a well-photographed listing — not at dealer-buy prices. Both parties look up comparables and share them; a trade that starts with two numbers on the table goes faster than one that starts with “what do you want for it?”.

2. Disclose in writing, both directions: identification and confidence, locality, restoration and repair, land status and legality, and what documents come with the piece. Send the record's specimen card or the listing text. A trade where one side later discovers filler is a trade that comes undone.

3. Check that both pieces can be traded. BLM casual-collected material cannot be traded any more than sold; a swap is a transfer for value. Export-restricted material is the same problem in both directions.

4. Photograph both pieces as they are on the day, with the scale bar, and exchange the photographs. This is the condition report for shipping and the record of what was agreed.

5. Ship at the same time, tracked and insured, or hand over in person with a two-line signed note: date, both names, both pieces by number, the agreed values. Stratum's trade ledger records both parties, both specimens or cash, the values, the condition snapshots and the shipping proof, and moves the provenance chain to the new owner's record.

6. The old owner's label and documents travel with the piece. Keep the piece's previous number as a prior number in your record; give the other party the same.

7. Tax: in the US, barter is income at fair market value for a dealer, and a collector who trades up realises a gain on the piece given. Keep the values in the ledger; that is what an accountant needs.
