Yadkin

Yadkin is the large Middle Woodland triangular of the Carolina Piedmont and Virginia, named by Coe for the Yadkin River in North Carolina and dated to about 300 BCE–800 CE. It was made chiefly from rhyolite and quartz in the Piedmont and from chert in the west. Yadkin is the ancestor of the smaller Late Woodland and Mississippian triangles of the region.

Diagnostic traits
Large, thin triangular point with straight to slightly excurvate edges and a concave base, often with slight basal ears.
Identification
Yadkin is larger and thicker than the later Caraway and Pee Dee triangles and has a more concave base; Badin is cruder and often has a straight base, and Levanna of the Northeast is broader relative to its length. Eared Yadkin varieties have more pronounced basal ears.
Reproductions and fakes
Rhyolite Yadkins are seldom faked; genuine rhyolite carries a weathered rind lighter than the fresh interior.
