Villanovan biconical urn

The Villanovan biconical urn is the hand-made cremation urn of Early Iron Age Etruria and Emilia, about 900 to 700 BCE, with a sharp carination, a single handle and incised geometric decoration, closed by a bowl or a helmet. It held the ashes in pit graves. It is the defining object of the culture.

Diagnostic traits
Hand-made impasto cremation urn with a sharp carination, single handle and incised meander or swastika ornament; lidded with a bowl or helmet.
Identification
The biconical impasto form with one handle and meander or swastika incising distinguishes it from hut urns, which model houses, and from later Etruscan bucchero, which is wheel-made and black. Impasto is coarse, dark and burnished. The second handle was deliberately broken off.
Reproductions and fakes
Reconstructed from mixed sherds with modern fill; genuine impasto is friable and soft. Outright fakes are rare because of the low unit value.
